Islington's record recycling levels are set to hit a new high with thirty new recycling litter bins landing in Upper Street this week. The new bins will allow people waiting at bus stops and walking along Upper Street to recycle 'as they go'.

The recycling litter bins will emptied every night, seven days a week to ensure the maximum amount can be recycled. The new bins have been a long-term goal of local Liberal Democrat councillors who saw the potential for residents and visitors at bus stops or walking down Upper Street to recycle on the spot rather than waiting to get home or just putting their recyclable rubbish in the bin.

The new way to recycle follows on from Liberal Democrat councillors winning the battle [at the North London Waste Authority] for all plastics and tetrapaks to be collected as part of the council's door-to-door recycling service.

Liberal Democrat councillor for St.Mary's ward, Emily Fieran-Reed, said:

"These new bins are a brilliant idea for a place as busy as Upper Street. No more excuses, no more mess.

"Recycling levels have already hit a record high in Islington after efforts from Liberal Democrat councillors to make recycling as easy as possible. Now Liberal Democrats want even more people to recycle and boost our recycling rates even more.

"The council's new expanded plastics recycling collections for residents and now this new 'recycle and go' service in Upper Street shows just how serious Liberal Democrats are about making Islington the greenest borough in inner London."
