Bridget backs historic Lib Dem move to abandon Trident replacement12.37.00am BST (GMT +0100) Sun 21st Jun 2009
Liberal Democrat PPC for Islington South & Finsbury, Bridget Fox, is backing Nick Clegg's position on Trident, Britain's nuclear deterrent. The Liberal Democrats are the first mainstream party to declare that they will not renew Britain's costly and controversial Trident nuclear deterrent system. Bridget says, "Labour's mishandling of the public finances has forced cuts onto the agenda. By saving the £20 billion which would be spent on upgrading Trident, the Liberal Democrats will help protect the public services and small businesses on which Islington people depend. "Trident is an outdated response to new world situation; it is now more important to fight recession, poverty and climate change, than to fight the cold wars of the past." Bridget adds, "I have always opposed renewing Trident. I believe nuclear weapons are no solution for the problems our world faces. "It is madness to spend billions upgrading Trident when there are so many other demands on public funding. The Government's rush to replace Trident was all about Tony Blair's desire for a legacy, and nothing to do with making our country safer. "It is now time for Labour to admit that they made a mistake, and abandon Trident." Related Link:Guardian: Nick Clegg says Lib Dems won't replace Trident.
