Bridget Fox attacks Labour's Iraq inquiry sham4.19.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 16th Jun 2009
Liberal Democrat PPC for Islington South & Finsbury, Bridget Fox, has denounced Labour's 'independent' inquiry into the legality of the Iraq war as a sham. The inquiry has been condemned as anything but open and independent: it will be held in private, by a closed team of hand-picked Whitehall mandarins and academics. The Liberal Democrats are calling for a full and open inquiry into the causes of the war. Bridget says, "Like many Islington residents, I marched against the war. Liberal Democrats opposed the illegal and immoral Iraq war from the start. An inquiry is long overdue, but it must be a truly public one. The Labour Government lied to us about the reasons for the war. We deserve the truth." Bridget's support for an open inquiry contrasts with the voting record of Islington South's current MP, Emily Thornberry. Unlike Islington's other MP, Jeremy Corbyn, Ms Thornberry has consistently voted against any inquiry into the war. Bridget adds, "It seems as though this Labour government will never learn. After the expenses scandal, you would have thought their first priority would be to restore trust in the political system. Instead they now announce a secret inquiry into the war in Iraq".
