Record-breaking welcome for 'Age of Stupid' in Islington11.01.17pm GMT Tue 17th Mar 2009
Islington film-goers made history on Sunday at the record-breaking premiere of the 'Age of Stupid'. The film is a drama-documentary about climate change, starring Pete Postlethwaite. It was premiered on Sunday and the premiere itself will be in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest ever simultaneous premiere, involving thousands of people at over 60 cinemas, including the Islington Vue. The central venue was Leicester Square where the green carpet was rolled out. Liberal Democrat candidates Bridget Fox (Islington South & Finsbury) and Jo Shaw (Holborn and St Pancras) attended the Islington premiere with Angel resident Betty Harris, one of over 200 small investers whose support enabled the film to be made. The film is helping raise awareness of the urgent need for action by government in the run up to the Copenhagen climate summit in December. Further screenings are scheduled at The Screen on the Green on Sunday 29th March, Tuesday 31st March and Thursday 2nd April, all at 2 p.m. Bridget says, "In the light of what we now know about climate change, the Government's decision to allow a third runway at Heathrow is morally indefensible. At the premiere Pete Postlethwaite and director Franny Armstrong pledged they would not vote Labour again if the Government now goes ahead with the Kingsnorth power station. "Residents in Islington South & Finsbury and Holborn & St Pancras have the chance to use their votes to make a real difference by voting Liberal Democrat at the next election."
