Islington has won two prestigious 'Clean Britain' awards. The Council's street cleaning services were awarded a four-star rating, and Islington was also given a special judges' award for the Cleaner Estates programme - which is improving cleanliness on the thirteen most deprived estates in the borough.

The prizes were awarded based on an anonymous inspection, and judged against a number of criteria including litter, flytipping, bin management, dog fouling, and cleanliness.

Greg Foxsmith, Islington's Liberal Democrat councillor in charge of the local environment, said:

"Residents will understand that keeping a densely-populated inner-city borough like Islington clean is a constant uphill battle, but the Liberal Democrats made it one of our top priorities and we've had some real success in making our borough cleaner and a nicer place to live. These prestigious awards confirm that Islington is on the right track and is getting better all the time. The priority now is upping our game in tackling dog-fouling, and we will be using our new powers to fine irresponsible owners who allow their dogs to soil our pavements."
