New children's library gets kids reading

Councillor Ruth Polling recently went 'back to the floor' by doing some work in one of Islington's many libraries.

Councillor Ruth Polling, Islington Lib Dem libraries chief, opened a new children's library in Islington this week. The Lewis Carroll library, London's only stand-alone children's library, has been serving Islington since 1952, and now has a brand new home in Copenhagen Street, N1.

Decorated with scenes inspired by Alice in Wonderland, the library has already been visited by many young people, including almost 100 Summer Reading Challenge prize winners. In its new building the library will, for the first time, be open on Saturdays as well as during the week - giving an extra place for Islington kids to go at the weekend. As well as books, the library will also provide DVDs, computer access, and homework clubs in a peaceful environment.

"This new library has a fantastic atmosphere and a great range of books, and has what it takes to encourage even more Islington kids to enjoy reading and learning."
