Bridget condemns Labour's 'crocodile tears' on housing11.32.26am BST (GMT +0100) Sat 9th Aug 2008
Parliamentary campaigner Bridget Fox is calling for more central Government help for Islington Council to build new homes for local people. Work has started on new family homes at Boleyn Road N1 and Armour Close N7, built and funded by Islington Council. Back in March, MPs voted on proposals that the Government should give financial support to councils 'to acquire, rehabilitate and build new housing'. The move was backed by Liberal Democrat MPs plus 'rebel' Labour MPs, including Jeremy Corbyn. But Islington South MP Emily Thornberry voted with the Government, helping kill off the plan. Bridget says "It is wonderful to see new council homes being built for the first time in a generation. I visited the Armour Close site last week, and can't wait to see the finished homes. "Every week I meet local people in housing need. It's good news that the Council is building new homes, but disgraceful that our own MP voted against Government money to help. "Once again, we've been let down by Labour. Islington's homeless families need more than crocodile tears from Emily Thornberry, they need action."
