Bridget backs fight for Kings Cross access12.34.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 17th Jun 2008
On Monday, Liberal Democrat candidate Bridget Fox joined community activists at Kings Cross station. With Camden Lib Dem councillor Paul Braithwaite, the group were protesting about the loss of access to Kings Cross station. For years, residents on the Islington side, and on Camden's Maiden Lane estate, have been able to access the north east corner of Kings Cross off York Way near Wharfdale Road. It provides a safe and convenient route into the busy mainline station. But now that pedestrian access is to be lost - as part of the same station rebuilding that will see the main entrance move to the far side, near St Pancras. Bridget Fox comments, "Like many people, I used this entrance for years on my daily commute. Rebuilding Kings Cross was supposed to bring improved access and links for both the current community and the hundreds of new residents and workers to come. Network Rail are arrogantly ignoring all this." Keeping a pedestrian exit at the northeast side makes sense; it reduces congestion around the busy bus stops on York Way, and it provides another exit from the station in case of emergency.
Bridget says, "The community campaigners who have worked long and hard to get the best from the Kings Cross redevelopment for our area are refusing to give up. Liberal Democrats believe in improving public transport for everyone. We want to keep our access to Kings Cross station, and we won't take no for an answer." Caledonian Road resident Dominic Mathon adds "I use that entrance every day. I'm shocked Network Rail are even considering closing it. I'm backing Bridget and this campaign all the way."
