Lib Dems Invest in Tackling Climate Change

3.14.00pm GMT Mon 26th Feb 2007

Islington Lib Dems are investing nine times more than the Government on cutting carbon emissions with the creation of a £3 million Climate Change Fund announced today.

For every home in Islington the Lib Dems will be investing £36 in comparison to the £3.91 government spend to cut carbon emissions.

Lib Dems have put tackling climate change and helping the environment at the heart of the way they run the council and are putting "their money where their mouth is" to meet tough targets to cut carbon emissions in Islington.

Councillor James Kempton, Leader of the Council, said:

"Labour have spoken a lot about climate change, the local Labour MP's trotted off to the Arctic with some huskies, but the reality behind the spin is that they've set lots of targets, and missed all of them. Liberal Democrats believe the time for sound bites is over. Over the next year people will see wind turbines, solar panels and other forms of renewable energy going up on their public buildings as we take real action to make Islington greener. "

Lib Dem MP Chris Huhne said:

Chris Huhne MP: Congratulations to Islington for radical green action

"Congratulations to Islington! This is another first from a Lib Dem council in developing responses to the biggest challenge of our age. A climate change fund can help get innovative projects off the ground and pioneer new ways of adapting our built environment to global warming".
