Lib Dems Reject Labour's Plan for Supermarket at Archway2.32.32pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 13th Sep 2006 Lib Dem Councillor Andrew Cornwell took the lead last night in rejecting Labour's plans for a supermarket at Archway. Labour Mayor Ken Livingstone had written to Islington Council supporting a major supermarket as part of any future development at Archway. Local residents had already spoken out against a supermarket as part of the consultation on a new draft planning guidance for Archway. The decision taken by Lib Dems last night ensured that a large supermarket couldn't be part of a predatory development in the area. Councillor for St George's ward Andrew Cornwell moved a motion rejecting Ken Livingstone's proposed Supermarket and recommending that the chair of North Area Committee write to Ken Livingstone informing him of resident's views. Councillor Andrew Cornwell said: "Residents have clearly told us that they don't want a supermarket at Archway. And we have listened to them. We are concerned that a supermarket would not only harm local shops but damage the environment. "It is disappointing that Ken has not listened to local people on this issue - but Lib Dem councillors will make sure local people's interests are protected."
