LIB DEMS CLEANING UP ST GEORGE'S

1.41.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 17th Apr 2006

Lib Dems in St George's are campaigning for a cleaner, greener ward, pledging more street cleaning, graffiti removal and dog poop bins in key streets such as Bardolph Road, Crayford Road and Tabley Road.

Lib Dem candidate Jen Smith says: "The Lib Dems have made a huge difference to Islington's streets already, with more street cleaning machines, faster, environmentally friendly graffiti removal and targeting people who don't clean up after their dogs. We want to extend that further in these key parts of St George's, with more dog bins and cleaning for these roads."

The Lib Dem run council has invested an extra £3.6 million in streets and waste services over the last two years, which included:

-Steam cleaning to get rid of oil and chewing gum

-New street sweeping machines to cover the whole of Islington

-Successful schemes to combat graffiti and fly-tipping

-Maintaining and cleaning streets, pavements and street furniture

Liberal Democrat candidates in St George's, Andrew Cornwell, Jen Smith and Tracy Ismail are pledging cleaner streets as part of their ten pledges of action in St George's if they are elected in May, including:

1 Work with St George's church to extend the range of activities available for 13-18 year olds in our area

2. Work with the new local police team to tackle anti-social behaviour and crime around Holloway Road and Tufnell Park Tube Station

3. Get recycling for everyone including Bakers Field, Moriarty Close, Corporation estate and private blocks.

4. We will rebuild Holloway School creating a modern secondary school with first-class facilities for local children

5 Maximise public use of the old St Georges theatre for local schools and community groups by liaising with Church of the Rock

6. Secure the use of the mobile CCTV van to deal with crime and anti-social behaviour in areas such as Tufnell Park Road and Dalmeny Road

7. Improve street cleaning and graffiti removal, and get more dog poop bins in place, particularly around the Bardolph, Crayford and Tabley Roads

8. Campaign to improve bus the frequency of the Number 4 bus route.

9. Provide local people more opportunity to become involved in the community by growing the Hilldrop and Caledonian Road timebank
