10.42.40am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 5th Oct 2004

Liberal Democrat members on the West Area Committee have agreed to allocate £25,000 to creating safe routes through the Bemerton Estate.

Councillor Bridget Fox, Councillor for Barnsbury Ward said

"Crime is becoming an increasing worry for residents in Islington. By using this money wisely to improve the local environment we can help improve the lives of local residents."

Other projects supported by the committee include

A clean up day in North Kings Cross. Play ground enhancements in Paradise Park. A litter bin program which will benefit the whole west area.

Suggestions for projects came from community groups and the council itself and is part of a scheme designed to invest money in the local environment. In Paradise Park the money will contribute to the larger regeneration project already taking place in the area.

The Bemerton Estate project comes in response to last year's consultation and will provide special lighting on the estate and remove obstructions and litter from the pavements. In the meeting both members of the public and Liberal Democrat councillors approved the project which aims to reduce crime and combat anti social behaviour in this area.
