Lib Dems put green issues at top of Islington agenda12.00.00am GMT Wed 21st Mar 2001 Green issues will be firmly at the heart of the Liberal Democrat election campaign in Islington. Parliamentary Spokesman, Keith Sharp said today that many people regarded the environment as an important element of their lives, especially in areas like Islington where there is so little greenspace. He said: " Tony Blair's "conversion" to the green cause was very recent after nearly four years in power. The Labour party have failed on the move forward the green agenda". "People understand they can make a difference. They know that through buying environmentally-friendly products, or using public transport or recycling waste that small actions make a big difference. Increasingly green issues are an important factor in deciding how people cast their vote. "I genuinely welcomed the fact that the Prime Minister made that environment speech a couple of weeks ago. But it is worrying that he had previously only made one speech on this subject in the four years since he came to office. Only time will tell how long this new-found interest continues. But we do have evidence now of Labour's record."
