Summer 2008
People Power: Bridget Fox, with campaigners Rita Roberts and Dolores Murray, and Lib Dem councillors Lucy Watt, George Allan and Emily Fieran-Reed.
Your Lib Dem local councillors are delighted at the news that our campaign to save Essex Road Post Office has paid off, and that it will be saved.
Councillor Lucy Watt (Lib Dem) said, "I have held several meetings with Post Office officials to put the case for why the post office should be saved, and I'm glad they've listened to us. I would like to thank the hundreds of local people who signed our petition and wrote to the Post Office themselves - your efforts have really paid off."
But the announcement comes at the same time as it was announced that several other local post offices in Islington are to close. Councillor Paula Belford said, "The Lib Dems were campaigning to save all of the Post Offices in Islington, as we know how valuable these services are to local people, and it is a shame that Labour weren't doing the same. The Tories didn't do anything either. We've worked hard with local people to protect services that are really valuable to our community."
Local Parliamentary campaigner Bridget Fox said, "I'm so pleased that all our efforts paid off. It is just a shame that we didn't win with the other local post offices, and Emily Thornberry didn't take the oppurtunity to vote to save them when she had the chance."
After lobbying by local residents and the Executive Member for Housing Cllr. Terry Stacy, Homes for Islington has taken over Caretaking and Estates Services arrangements for the Circle Anglia-owned properties on Bentham Court.
Terry said, "Having two housing providers doing the same thing on one estate was a waste of resources, as residents had pointed out to us. Now that HfI have taken over, all the residents will be getting services at the same standard."
Lights Change: Bridget Fox and Angel resident Keith Angus at Angel Crossing. The Lib Dems want to see the crossing reviewed by TfL and made safer.
Lib Dem campaigners are stepping up the pressure for a re-design of Angel crossing. The crossing, from the tube to Liverpool Road, is crowded and dangerous.
The wait between crossing times is too long, the pedestrian island is too small, the railings are dangeorus for cyclists, and vehicles are still passing when the green man comes on.
Back in 2004, Bridget Fox and the local Lib Dems launched a campaign for the crossing to be reviewed. Thousands of people signed their petition asking the Mayor of London and TfL to act. The Council supported the demands for a safer crossing. Now campaigners hope the new Mayor will listen.
One option is to move the crossing to the north side of the Liverpool Road junction. That would allow people to cross safely while traffic heads south from Liverpool Road.
Cllr. James Kempton says, "We've been listening to what local people want, and have worked long and hard to get progress from TfL."
Bridget says, "Angel crossing is a nightmare. Islington residents have waited long enough. It's time for the Mayor to act."
Mayor of London Boris Johnson has now admitted that his plans to replace bendy buses are an aspiration rather than a firm commitment, following questions from London Lib Dems.
Local campaigner Bridget Fox says, "Islington residents hate bendy buses. They are dangeorus, encourage fare-dodging, and take up too much space on our roads. Boris made big promises about the buses; now he has to deliver."

Waiting on the Buses: Bridget is campaigning for Boris Johnson to fulfill his manifesto pledge and replace the bendy buses.
