Summer 2008
Building Better Schools: Councillor Tracy Ismail at Holloway School, where construction work on new facilities has begun.
The major rebuilding at Holloway School is well under way, with a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of the new works taking place at the end of June.
The temporary accomodation is all complete and ready, and teachers at the school say even the temporary buildings are better than what they teach in at the moment.
Puils are loving the new sports facilities, including a gym with weight and training machines, sports hall and 25m pool, which were built under the joint programme with the Bridge School. Local youth groups will be using the pool over the summer.
Cllr. Ismail will be spending money from the North Area Committee budget on outdoor play equipment for pupils at the Bridge Special School which now shares the site with Holloway.
Cllr. Ismail said, "Islington is really lucky to have such state of the art special school and with the potential to integrate with mainstream Holloway next door as well. Few other local authorities have special needs education of this standard, and it's a pleasure to be helping them out."
The Zone Youth Club at Holloway School, which has also been newly refurbished, is open over the holidays, Monday to Saturday 28th July to 29th August for 13 to 19 year olds. Call 7697 9242 to find out more.
On the Side of Residents: Cllrs. Andrew Cornwell and Tracy Ismail, along with Junction Cllr. Ursula Woolley, outside Tufnell's bar. The Councillors are working with local residents to resolve complaints regarding the anti-social behaviour the bar generates.
Lib Dem councillors from St. George's and neighbouring Junction Ward are campaigning to bring Tufnell's bar on Tufnell Park Road under control. Residents have been suffering for too long from the late night noise and anti-social behaviour association with it.
Cllr. Tracy Ismail, commented, "People who live close to Tufnell's have just had enough.
"I've persuaded the local Safer Neighbourhoods police to keep a much closer eye on it, especially at the weekends, and I know many local residents are looking for a review of the licence.
"No-one needs to put up with this kind of thing in a residential area."
Local parent Cllr. Ismail, as a governor of Tufnell Park Primary School, has led the campaign to sort out the school's long-standing problem with its boundary wall.
Cllr. Ismail, a governor at the school since the beginning of the year, committed to help headteacher Alan Baldwin sort out the problem which has already cost the school £14,000 and could go as high as nearly £40,000.
She said, "I'm delighted I've persuaded the Council to see sense and decide to help the school out with this problem which has been festering for years."
Thanks to Cllr. Ismail's efforts, the Council will step in to rebuild the damaged wall backing on to Anson Road - though it doesn't own it - to stop the legal wrangling which has been a huge burden to school as it turns itself around.

St. George's Lib Dem councillors have succeeded in their campaign for the Council's local environment team to carry out a proper clean-up at Tufnell Park Tube and in the surrounding area.
Specialist cleaners removed graffiti and deep cleaned and removed all the chewing gum from the pavements around the Tube station.
They also cleared the waste land at the end of Melyn Close of fly-tipping.
Cllr. Isamail has asked senior officers at the Council to take enforcement action against the owners of the land.
"They can't be allowed to let it get in to this terrible state all the time; people just use it as a dumping ground.
"The Council runs a free service to get bulky household rubbish taken away - you just call Contact Islington on 020 7527 2000.
"I'm insisting that the Council gets the owners of the land to take proper responsibility for it."
