Summer 2008
Bagging Up: Mildmay Councillors Anna Berent and Rhodri Jamieson-Ball with the Executive Member for the Environment, Cllr. Greg Foxsmith, on Newington Green upon the successful conclusion of the campaign to make the Green plastic bag free.
Mildmay's Lib Dem councillors, alongside local residents, Newington Green Action Group and Friends of the Earth, have been working hard for Newington Green to become plastic bag free.
A poll conducted by Islington Friends of the Earth found that 94% of residents supported this move.
We've worked to ensure that this great local initiative would have support from the council's administrative staff. They've helped organise activities to promote the campaign, including a plastic bag free week at Newington Green.
We've also ensured there was funding available so that the local residents could receive fair trade cotton bags which could be reused by frequent shoppers in Newington Green.
Cllr. Berent said, "As a passionate environmentalist I am delighted that we Lib Dems are acting on our belief that we need to get rid of environmentally harmful plastic bags. We've funded 3,000 Fair Trade cotton bags for local shoppers and we will work with the whole community to ensure this happens."

Your local councillors have secured new knife wands (hand-held metal detectors), for use by the police in Mildmay. These are intended to make it easier for the police to identify those who carry knives.
This follows other recent crime initiatives that include new Police Community Support Officers and the Gang Disruption strategy. Police have already been putting the knife wands to work, and have stated that they are already finding fewer people carrying knives.
However, your Lib Dem councillors know more must be done, and are looking at trying new ways to tackle crime. We are currently talking with the police as to what measures need to be taken to tackle crime in Mildmay.

Putting Down Roots: Your local councillors have secured new trees for Mildmay.
Fulfilling an election pledge, your local Councillors have secured funding to plant more trees in Mildmay.
The trees will be going up on the east side of Newington Green, and are the most recent example of the tree-planting intiatives your Councillors have pushed for in recent years.
Many streets in Mildmay have already had new trees planted, such as Ferntower Road (pictured right).
Cllr. Meral Ece said, "It's great that the Council has been able to fund more tree-planting in our area. It's good for the environment, as well as improving the look of our streets."
Your councillors have brought in some extra funding for local organisations.
The money is intended for small voluntary organisations with an income or funding of less than £10,000, particularly those involved in community-based activities.
Cllr. Anna Berent said, "We've provided this money to make sure that our local groups and clubs can get small grants for their activities this summer and over the Christmas period. While the summer grants have already been allocated, funding is still available for the winter."

Your local Councillors have secured new works for the Highbury Estate.
Angry local residents had accused Homes for Islington of breaking a promise to install new bathrooms on the estate.
HfI had claimed that a survey carried out by its contractor had found that new bathrooms were not required under the Decent Homes Act.
This survey went against what residents had been earlier promised in a letter from HfI. Your councillors were able to take this and campaign alongside local residents for HfI to reverse its decision.
As a consequence, residents on the estate should shortly be receiving new bathrooms.
Cllr. Rhodri Jamieson-Ball said, "It's great that we were able to secure new estate works for local residents. No-one should have to deal with substandard housing."
