Victory!

Essex Road Post Office Victory

People Power: Bridget Fox, with campaigners Rita Roberts and Dolores Murray, and Lib Dem councillors Lucy Watt, George Allan and Emily Fieran-Reed.

Your Lib Dem local councillors are delighted at the news that our campaign to save Essex Road Post Office has paid off, and that it will be saved.

Lib Dem Councillor Lucy Watt said, "I have held several meetings with Post Office officials to put the case for why the post office should be saved, and I'm glad they've listened to us. I would like to thank the hundreds of local people who signed our petition and wrote to the Post Office themselves - your efforts have really paid off."

But the announcement comes at the same time as it was announced that several other local post offices in Islington are to close. Councillor Paula Belford said, "The Lib Dems were campaigning to save all of the Post Offices in Islington, as we know how valuable these services are to local people, and it is a shame that Labour weren't doing the same. The Tories didn't do anything either. We've worked hard with local people to protect services that are really valuable to our community."

Local Parliamentary campaigner Bridget Fox said, "I'm so pleased that all our efforts paid off. It is just a shame that we didn't win with the other local post offices, and Emily Thornberry didn't take the oppurtunity to vote to save them when she had the chance."

Cleaning Up Our Estates

Green Team

Green Team: Councillor Lucy Watt talks to a member of the council's new service.

The Lib Dems in Islington have made a real difference to the local area - giving us cleaner streets, a well loved recycling service, and making the streets look nicer. Recently extra money has been put into cleaning up local estates, including painted bins on Sickert Court Estate, and extra flower beds have been planted near Gulland Walk and Caldy Walk, making Canonbury a more pleasant place to live.

The council's new 'Green Team' are also now operating in the area, helping improve any problems with the recycling and waste services.

As well as all of this, a huge investment is currently being made in bringing the council flats on the New River Green estate up to a decent standard.

Flowers for Essex Road At Last

Lucy Watt and Barbara Smith Flowers

Islington in Bloom: Councillors Barbara Smith and Lucy Watt with the new flowers.

Local Councillor and Council Deputy Leader Lucy Watt has won her campaign to bring hanging baskets to Essex Road. The campaign was launched after local traders saw the difference that the flowers had made to Holloway Road and Upper Street and asked for the council to bring them to Canonbury.

Cllr. Lucy Watt says, "It's great that we have these flowers in Essex Road this year. It really brightens up the area, and shows that the Lib Dem run council values Essex Road. I hope that it will attract more shoppers to the area to support our great local business."

Saro Castagna, chair of Essex Road Traders Association said, "I'm really pleased that the Council has listened to our request and put in these flowers! Essex Road is a great place to shop and we're doing all that we can to make the place a more attractive place to come."

The Essex Road traders, along with the Council and local police, will soon be launching a shop radio scheme to help shopkeepers report crime and antisocial behaviour.
