Plans by Transport forLondonto cut the 236 night bus service have been slammed by Highbury Liberal Democrat campaigners.
The 236 bus route is a 24-hour service that runs betweenFinsburyParkstation and Hackney Wick and is used by 1,000 local residents a week at nights. It provides a vital link between Highbury and theHomertonHospital, used by Islington residents living in the east of the borough, and serves residents with some of the lowest car ownership levels inLondon.
Transport forLondonis currently consulting on moves to stop the night service between 1am and 4am.
Local Liberal Democrats led a debate at the last meeting of the council on the issue calling on Transport forLondonto think again. The Liberal Democrat motion was agreed by all parties and the council will now write formally to Transport forLondonurging them to reconsider the planned axing of the night service.
Highbury East ward Liberal Democrat councillor John Gilbert, said:
"Sadly, this is like Groundhog Day as we were here last year too when Boris tried to cut the 236 night service. We saw him off then and I hope we can now see him off again.
"Nearly one thousand people currently use the 236 night bus every week. There are no other buses that use this route. Cutting this bus route now is madness and will save very little money.
"Islington has one of the lowest levels of car ownership in the country and local night workers rely on bus services. As usual it is the least well-off who will be hardest hit by Boris' plans."
