Islington's Labour council has failed to spend over £10 million on local services in the past two years, shock new figures have revealed.
Last year the council underspent by £9million and a report to the Council's Executive highlighted that £2million would not be spent this financial year. The £11million underspend comes at a time when the Labour council is making £x million of cuts this year. The council cut services by £7million last year.
Liberal Democrat councillors have demanded answers on how the council has managed not spend such a huge amount while still cutting vital services.
Islington Liberal Democrat Finance Spokesperson, councillor John Gilbert, said:
"To not spend early £10 million in two years is incredible when Islington Labour councillors claim there is no money and they are making cuts to services.
"Think how many services and jobs that could save in Islington. It is difficult to take Islington Labour councillors seriously when they complain about the cuts when they have managed to spend £11million less than they planned to these past two years.
"But Labour councillors seem to prefer to hoard the money away so they can splash the cash before the next elections."
