Cllr John Gilbert
Local Lib Dems have slammed the Labour-run council for its decision to spend an extra £1million on repairing pot holes only in 'working class areas'.
At May's council Executive meeting, Labour councillor Paul Smith said that the funding would be prioritised for "working class areas" despite the facts that potholes affect everyone and that Islington is famous for having rich and poor living next door to each other.
The previous Liberal Democrat administration had already put aside £1million to spend on potholes across the borough in the year ahead.
Lib Dem Shadow Executive Member for Finance, councillor John Gilbert, said:
"Labour's prioritisation of 'working class areas' is ridiculous and harks back to the loony left council that nearly bankrupted Islington in the 1990s.
"It is particularly meaningless in a borough like ours where, unlike in most parts of London, rich and poor live alongside each other. Don't we all use the same streets? Will roads in so-called 'posh' areas like Highbury and Barnsbury never have their roads repaired under Labour?
"Will Labour councillors be setting up yet another new council committee to build a new world order, carving up the borough into 'working class' and 'posh' streets? This is political correctness and class war gone mad."
