Highbury Corner post Office
Long-standing plans to improve Highbury Corner will finally get the green light this week.
The creation of a new public square outside Highbury & Islington station and moving the post office to the other side of Highbury Corner were ideas first pushed by local Liberal Democrat councillors. Liberal Democrats also set aside £4 million in the council's budget to make the plans a reality.
The council's Executive will this week give the go-ahead to the first phase of improvements at Highbury Corner. Liberal Democrat councillors are still pushing London Mayor Boris Johnson to commit the funds to scrap the gyratory system at Highbury Corner, re-introduce two-way traffic and allow public access to the park at the centre of the Highbury Corner island.
Highbury East Liberal Democrat councillor Terry Stacy said:
"Liberal Democrats have fought long and hard for these improvements at Highbury Corner.
"It is only because Liberal Democrats allocated £4 million of council funding that these changes are happening at all.
"Now Boris needs to cough up his share of the readies so that Highbury Corner sees all the improvements needed to make it a place people want to stop and use rather than get away from."
New St.Mary's ward councillor Sue Buchanan said:
"Local residents will be relieved to see the end of the present prefab post office outside Highbury & Islington station and look forward to enjoying the new improved one planned on Highbury Corner.
"With the Overground station improvements and the East London Line extension on the way, it's about time that this eyesore area is given some long overdue TLC."
