Islington Liberal Democrat councillors have demanded London's Mayor make changes to the planned programme of closures on the Northern Line.
Earlier this year, TubeLines, Transport for London's contractor for Northern Line improvement works, announced a series of weekend and evening closures to upgrade the line. The news was greeted with uproar by Islington residents who face months of disruption.
Liberal Democrats have now demanded an assurance from Boris Johnson that the proposed changes in ownership of TubeLines will mean new ways of carrying out the upgrade works so that the inconvenience Islington residents face is kept to a minimum.
Junction ward Liberal Democrat councillor Ursula Woolley said:
"The plan to close sections of the Northern Line in the evening and weekends for months and months is not acceptable.
"Liberal Democrats have been lobbying the Mayor to find a new way of carrying out these essential works. Residents using Old Street, Angel, Tufnell Park and Archway stations don't deserve to left shut out of the tube for months on end.
"The Mayor has now promised to review the works programme. Let's hope he listens to reason and finds a better way to improve the Northern Line."
Note
Liberal Democrats have tabled a question to the Mayor of London asking what improvements to the Northern Line upgrade programme Islington passengers can expect from the restructuring of TubeLines. It will be answered at the June Mayor's Question Time.
