Liberal Democrats in Islington froze the council tax this year after Labour's super-inflationary rise last year.
Islington Liberal Democrats have welcomed the commitment by the new coalition government to freeze council tax for the next two years.
The move by the Liberal Democrat-Conservative government was outlined last week in the coalition's 'Programme for Government'.
Liberal Democrats in Islington froze the council tax this year after Labour's super-inflationary rise last year. They are now calling on Labour councillors to give the same commitment now they control the council.
Islington Liberal Democrat Finance Spokesperson, Cllr John Gilbert, comments:
"I welcome the coalition government's decision to work with local councils to freeze council tax for the next two years.
"Islington residents are still struggling to make ends meet. That's why Liberal Democrat councillors didn't put up the council tax this year. Freezing council tax for another two years will help local residents even more. I hope Labour will see sense and not revert to type by jacking up our council tax. Sadly, their track record is not promising.
"Liberal Democrats nationally will give everyone paying income tax money back in their pocket by changing the tax system. Along with freezing the council tax, Liberal Democrats are helping to make life a little easier for those struggling to pay the bills, especially the lowest paid."
