Cllr Terry Stacy, Lib Dem Leader of the Opposition
Islington Liberal Democrats have slammed the new Labour council administration saying their plans for a new 'fairness' quango is a total waste of taxpayers' money.
Local Labour politicians announced last week that they are setting up a 'Fairness Commission' to determine "what the Council should do to make our borough a fairer place." Islington Lib Dems believe that setting up the new quango will:
• waste thousands of pounds of local taxpayers' money for no good reason
• mean less money for other frontline services at a time of real financial pressure
• tell us nothing that isn't already known about levels of poverty in the borough
Islington Liberal Democrat leader, Cllr Terry Stacy, comments:
"What a total and utter waste of money. Less than two weeks after getting elected, with money tighter than ever, old habits seem to die hard for Labour. If in doubt, set up a costly talking shop.
"Labour wants their 'Fairness Commission' to set out what the Council should do and how the Council's budget should be spent. But we have just had elections for that and we all know what needs to change in Islington to make the borough fairer.
"But it seems Labour are clueless and are making it up as they go along. The Labour leader wants to waste money on a quango to tell her what to do. Where's the leadership?"
