Bridget Fox with other candidates at the Ask a Climate Question event
Bridget Fox, Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Islington South and Finsbury, met Islington residents concerned about climate change at the recent 'Ask a Climate Question' event.
Five of the prospective parliamentary candidates for the constituency of Islington South and Finsbury gathered at City University for the election hustings organised by the Ask the Climate Question coalition. An audience of around one hundred local residents heard a remarkable degree of agreement from all three candidates from the main parties that climate change was an urgent and pressing priority, with far more radical action needed from both government and the public, and several candidates stated that it was the most important issue of the election. On local issues, there was a consensus that London needed greater legal protection for cyclists, and community action to cut pollution.
Bridget told the audience that Friends of the Earth had rated the Liberal Democrats' manifesto the greenest of the main parties. Bridget, who is an award-winning campaigner on sustainable transport, also spoke about her role as a founder supporter of the 10:10 campaign, her opposition to Heathrow expansion, and her pioneering environmental work with Islington Council.
Bridget said, "We are the first generation to be fully aware of the impact of climate change, and the last to be able to do something to avert it. I hope to be one of a new wave of MPs committed to keeping climate change at the top of the political agenda."
Veronica Pasteur, a local resident who helped organise the hustings, said 'I find it very encouraging that there was such a high level of engagement with climate and environmental issues from both local residents here in Islington South and Finsbury and the candidates, but it's vitally important that we make sure that they keep to their word when they're in power'.
