Councillor Terry Stacy, Bridget Fox, and Nick Clegg MP support the Times Amateur Boxing Club in Islington.
Islington's Liberal Democrat councillors have given the Times Amateur Boxing Club 25 years of secure use of their rooms in the York Way Community Centre at Tiber Gardens - a deal saving the club over £10,000 a year in rent.
The Times Amateur Boxing Club was founded over eighty years ago, and has worked with thousands of young people over that time. The Boxing Club supports young people to gain fitness, confidence, and self-discipline, and has supported many initiatives to reduce antisocial behaviour and youth crime.
The Times Boxing Club won the support of Liberal Democrat party leader Nick Clegg MP, who visited last year. Mr. Clegg said: "Something has gone wrong under Labour. There has been a 90 per cent increase in the number of 10 to 13-year-olds coming into the criminal justice system. And they are spending 11 times more on criminals than on activities. The Lib-Dems have a different approach. We must encourage projects like this."
Councillor Terry Stacy, Islington's Liberal Democrat council leader, said:
"The boxing club has a fantastic record, and we're delighted to be able to give them 25 years security here in Islington at only a nominal rent. The Lib Dems are serious about giving young people an alternative to crime and antisocial behaviour, and the boxing club makes a real difference."
