Islington Council is finalising plans to install new secure cycle parking on nine of Islington's estates, after the council's Liberal Democrat administration won an injection of new funding for the scheme at the council's annual budget-setting meeting.
Brand new secure bike sheds will be installed at:
The secure cycle parking was piloted on two housing estates in Highbury, at Taverner and Peckett Squares. They have proved so popular that Lib Dem councillors fought to have them rolled out across the borough.
The cycle sheds tackle the problems of keeping a bike in a flat or locked in an estate stairwell. The council has also tripled the number of bike stands on Islington's streets since 2007 to over 1230, so there is always somewhere secure to park bikes near work or at the shops.
People on the nine estates will be invited to apply for space to keep their bikes in the new secure sheds.
Council finance chief John Gilbert, who is a keen cyclist and championed the original Highbury scheme, said:
"As an administration the Liberal Democrats are always looking for opportunities to make it safer and easier for people to travel by bike. It is very environmentally friendly, healthy, and saves you a lot of money compared with other means of transport."
