Liberal Democrat councillors are demanding that Mayor of London Boris Johnson comes to Islington to face a public grilling on the proposed closures of the Northern Line.
With stops at Archway, Tufnell Park, Angel and Old Street, the Northern Line is a vital transport artery running through Islington. But contractors Tube Lines are planning early closures for upgrade work on the Northern Line between July and November, with decreased service from as early as 8:30pm. 82 weekend closures on most of the line are also planned next year.
Liberal Democrat councillors are not convinced that all options surrounding the planned closures have been considered. They are calling on Boris Johnson, as Chair of Transport for London, to face the council's scrutiny committee and answer questions in public.
Islington scrutiny committee chair Stefan Kasprzyk said:
"A lot of people in Islington rely on the Northern Line. People working late and coming back to Tufnell Park and Archway have no easy alternative. A lot of local businesses around Archway, Angel, and Old Street rely on the weekend and evening economy and visitors who use the tube.
"We understand the importance of upgrading the line. But the Mayor hasn't convinced us that all the options have been looked at. It looks like Tube Lines are causing more disruption than is really necessary.
"There are a lot of questions for the Mayor to answer and we need him to come to a public hearing here in Islington so local people and businesses can bring Boris to book."
