Bridget with Councillor Greg Foxsmith and Simon Hughes MP at the launch of the 10:10 climate change campaign which she fully supports
Speaking at a screening of The Age of Stupid, Lib Dem Parliamentary candidate Bridget Fox urged people to do their bit to prevent climate change. The film aims to "turn viewers into activists" and seeks to put pressure on the Government to ensure a real commitment to halting climate change at the UN talks in Copenhagen this December.
The powerful film which is set in 2055, asks the question "why didn't we do something while there was still time?" It details the ways in which the Earth is suffering due to climate change, including freak weather such as floods and hurricanes, melting ice caps and rising sea levels and temperatures.
The Copenhagen Climate Summit on December 9th will see governments from all over the world come together to discuss how to tackle climate change. A new pact will be decided upon, but will it go far enough to really tackle the problem?
Bridget Fox said:
"It was great to meet such an enthusiastic audience for this screening of "The Age of Stupid" and I congratulate All Saints Church for taking this initiative. As the film makes clear, we all have a role to play in acting urgently on climate change before it's too late.
"Individuals and organisations can do our bit by signing up to the 10:10 pledge: to cut 10% of our carbon emissions by the end of 2010.
"Islington Council has already signed up to the 10:10 pledge and I am lobbying the government to make a real commitment too. It's frustrating that MPs, including Emily Thornberry, voted for the 10:10 target to apply to councils but not to government departments. Their half-hearted measures so far have not done enough and time is running out."
"We are the first generation to see the impact of climate change and the last generation to be able to stop it. The whole world will suffer if we don't act fast."
Bridget, who has been a passionate local campaigner on the environment for many years, urged everyone to sign up to the 10:10 pledge at http://www.1010uk.org/
The film was screened at All Saints Church on Carnegie Street, just off Caledonian Road. People gave a donation to see the film and a discussion with local political figures followed afterwards. Other "indie" screenings of the film are taking place see http://www.notstupid.org/ for details and for how to do more.
