Lib Dems target Elthorne crime fears

October 28, 2009 10:18 AM
Councillor Greg Foxsmith and Police meet Elthorne Estate residents

Hillrise ward councillor Greg Foxsmith organised a meeting between the police and residents of the Elthorne Estate.

The Islington Liberal Democrats are responding to resident fears about crime and anti-social behaviour on the Elthorne Estate and in Elthorne Park, near Archway.

Local Liberal Democrat councillors have knocked on every resident's door with a crime survey, and took the findings direct to their meeting with the Police last week.

Working with the Police, Liberal Democrat councillors have:

  • agreed to bring in a temporary dispersal zone on the Elthorne Estate and in Elthorne Park to concentrate police resources on tackling gang ringleaders starting on October 27th.
  • fully funded youth provision to provide positive activities for local young people
  • demanded action to get the CCTV cameras on the estate working properly
  • told Homes for Islington to enforce tenancy action if any of the perpetrators live on the estate
  • agree a more visible police presence on the Elthorne Estate

Local Liberal Democrat councillor Greg Foxsmith joined the Borough Police Commander for a walkabout on the estate last Thursday. There was also a meeting with residents and tenant leaders afterwards.

Elthorne Estate resident Lorraine Constantinou said:

"It's good that our councillors arranged for the police top brass to come down to talk to us first hand and tell us how they are now going to deal with the gangs."

Local Liberal Democrat councillor Greg Foxsmith said:

"The council has moved swiftly to put in place the measures the Police asked for to deal with anti-social behaviour and gangs on the estate and in the park.

"Nobody should have to put up with what Elthorne residents and park users have seen recently. Gangs from outside Islington are not welcome here and we will take the firmest action to stop them."
