Local campaigners Vamsi, Barbara and David examine the pavement blocked by Tesco trolleys
Pedestrians at Islington Green are taking on Tesco's in a fight to get their pavement back from the supermarket giant. Their campaign is being backed by local Liberal Democrats.
Residents have been complaining for months that, since opening their Metro store at Islington Green, Tesco's delivery lorries have parked in Essex Road right outside the store to load and unload. This means that the pavement is often clogged up with large pallets and trolleys making it almost impossible for pedestrians to pass.
Now residents and local Liberal Democrat campaigners are calling on Tesco's and the Council to crack down on the problem and keep the pavement clear.
St.Peter's ward Liberal Democrat team member David Sant said:
"It's not acceptable for Tesco HGV lorries and deliveries to stop the traffic and force pedestrians into the road."
Local Liberal Democrat campaigner Vamsi Velagapudi added:
Lorry trouble: Vamsi and Bridget want Tesco to act
"Tescos and their drivers need to show more respect and consideration for the fact that this is a residential area. I have written to the Council to see what enforcement action might be possible."
Bridget Fox, LibDem parliamentary campaigner for Islington South, said:
"What with the bendy buses and the junction with Upper Street, this end of Essex Road is busy enough without the Tesco lorries bringing everything to a halt.
"Tesco must look again at organising their deliveries so they don't block up the public pavement and this main road in the middle of the day. I am writing to Tesco management asking them to sort this out."
