Liberal Democrats at Pride 2009: proud to represent you
Islington Liberal Democrats were among a London-wide contingent from their party marching at London Pride on Saturday. The marchers were welcomed to Trafalgar Square by Liberal Democrat MP Simon Hughes and 2008 Mayoral candidate Brian Paddick.
The Islington Liberal Democrats on the march included Bridget Fox, PPC for Islington South and Finsbury; Cllr Lucy Watt, Deputy Leader of the Council, and former council leader, Cllr James Kempton.
The Liberal Democrat party is proud of its record, having consistently championed gay rights for decades.
Islington's Liberal Democrat Council has also taken a stand on issues such as civil partnerships and fighting homophobic bullying in school.
Liberal Democrats: supporting LGBT rights across London
Cllr Lucy Watt, Deputy Leader of Islington Council, said:
"Islington has one of the highest numbers of gay residents in the country, and I was pleased to join so many of them celebrating at Pride in central London on Saturday, it was a great day. But we need to remember that whilst Islington has been a place that is comfortable with openly gay politicians - from the first openly gay mayor and MP to current council leader Terry Stacy - we still have a long way to go.
"People are still getting attacked on our streets and called names in our schools just for being who they are, which is why our Liberal Democrat-run council is continuing to take action on these issues.
Islington South Parliamentary Candidate, Bridget Fox added:
"Marching at Pride was not just great fun. It was an important chance to show solidarity and a shared commitment to civil liberties. I will always be proud to represent the full diversity of Islington."
