Leading Liberal Democrats turned out to support the young stars of Islington Youth Theatre as they took to the stage of the Olivier Theatre at the South Bank last night.
The young people put on their production of the play 'Success' by Nick Drake, in a non-stop show featuring drama, singing and dance, all on the topical theme that losing money doesn't matter, as long as you have love. They were chosen from amongst hundreds of other youth theatres to perform at the National Theatre as part of the prestigious New Connections Festival 2009.
Bridget and James: supporting youth arts in Islington
Former Council leader James Kempton, who has consistently championed youth arts in Islington, says: "Last night, on the biggest professional stage in the country, Islington Youth Theatre were superb, proving themselves well-deserved winners of the most prestigious youth drama award there is. This is absolutely brilliant and a real tribute to the skill, determination and hard work of you all. It is without doubt the best news to come out of community arts in Islington for as long as I can remember, and possibly ever! Just compare how much better it is for young people in Liberal Democrat Islington than when Labour ran this borough."
Liberal Democrat PPC for Islington South and Finsbury, Bridget Fox, is one of the 'Success Shareholders' who helped Islington Youth Theatre take part. She says, "I was thrilled by the superb singing, dancing and acting, and by the confidence and maturity of the performers. Islington Youth Theatre does such excellent work and I was delighted to help sponsor the show: they have all done Islington proud."
