Sarah Ludford: representing us in Europe

Sarah Ludford has written an open letter thanking Islington voters: "I WOULD like to thank everyone in Islington who came out to vote in the European Parliament elections last week. I'm proud of the strong, positive European campaign Liberal Democrats fought, highlighting the need for us to work with our European partners on the economy, the environment, crime and civil liberties.

"We missed narrowly getting a second Liberal MEP elected in London to join me. But I am pleased to have the opportunity to represent the interests of Londoners, including Islington residents, in the European Parliament for another five years.

"Many people have told me, even those who are cool about the European Union, that they do recognise it is important and that we must be fully engaged. Tories and UKIP can hardly fight for our interests if they reject the EU.

"Here in Islington, Liberal Democrats improved on their results in the London Mayoral elections and knocked the Conservatives way down into fourth place. This shows yet again, as consistently over the last 30 years, that the only way of stopping Labour in this borough is by voting Lib Dem."
