Labour's Town Hall political games have put negotiations for new housing in jeopardy.
Islington's Labour councillors have come under fire for seeking to delay and even block moves to build vital new homes in the borough.
The last meeting of the Council's Executive on 23rd April agreed plans to build hundreds of new homes on the Six Acres Estate and Churnfield House at Finsbury Park. This follows a major consultation exercise with residents on the estate and led to an estate masterplan being drawn up.
However, Labour councillors, including one of the local councillors, decided instead to 'call in' the Executive's decision delaying the process by at least six weeks and now potentially putting the negotiations with a local housing association over the site in jeopardy.
Islington's new Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Housing, councillor Barbara Smith, said:
"Labour claims it cares about tenants in this borough and cares about new homes for all the people on the housing waiting list. But these are just crocodile tears.
"This is the reality of Labour on housing in Islington. While they talk the talk, when it comes to building housing in their own backyard they find every excuse under the sun to block the plans.
"It is not right that residents on the Six Acres Estate and at Churnfield House are left in limbo while Labour plays its political games. Labour's delay could potentially put new local homes and jobs on hold for up to two-years. So much for being on local people's side."
