London Mayor Boris Johnson and Councillor James Kempton met in City Hall to discuss the future of Highbury Corner.
London Mayor Boris Johnson last week finally gave the green light to plans to transform Highbury Corner - one of Islington´s key public spaces.
The transformation of Highbury Corner will go ahead in four phases provided the cash can be found. TfL and the Council will now enter tough funding negotiations to make sure the project moves off the drawing board to become a reality.
Last month´s announcement by the Mayor on funding for Transport for London projects saw other major Islington projects - such as step-free access to tube stations and getting rid of the hated Archway gyratory system - kicked into the long grass. All London boroughs were disappointed by the funding cuts.
But after months of pressure from Islington Council leader, James Kempton, the Mayor has agreed that Highbury Corner will buck the trend and see improvements go ahead.
Local Liberal Democrat councillor for St.Mary´s ward and Islington Council leader, James Kempton said:
"Getting the Mayor to sign up to improving Highbury Corner against the odds in difficult economic times is a major achievement for Islington.
"Residents and businesses have made clear for years they wanted to see something happen at Highbury Corner. The station is hardly the best welcome to Islington and the open space in the middle of the roundabout is so near, yet so far for people.
"The Council and Liberal Democrats have listened to what local people want and have now convinced the Mayor. I am determined to see Highbury Corner become a pleasant cleaner, greener space that we can all be proud of."
