Islington council has launched a major new review of how trees are managed in the borough and how improvements can be made to the council's tree service.
Islington has 10,600 street trees, 15,300 in parks, 12,000 on housing estates, and many more in private gardens. The council has planted over 400 new trees this year, and according to figures compiled by the GLA has more street trees per kilometre than any other London borough.
Such a wealth of greenery requires looking after, so earlier this year Islington's Liberal Democrat councillors asked the council's Sustainability Review Committee to look at how to better maintain and protect trees. Their review will look at:
The committee will be touring the borough and inviting witness evidence from residents and experts.
Councillor Ruth Polling, Islington's Tree Czar, said:
"As we move into autumn we're reminded how beautiful the borough's trees are and how lucky we are that our inner-city borough has so many. This Liberal Democrat administration will keep it that way. The Lib Dems wanted this review because we want to increase the amount of trees in the borough and protect those we already have.
"Islington is already streets ahead on this, and we've even been recognised in a Parliamentary Motion as a model of good practice. But residents will agree that there's always room for improvement, and I hope they will work with us on this review."
