Whittington data farce strengthens case against ID cards, says Bridget

Expensive ID cards won't make us any safer

Missing discs, containing personal data on 18,000 Islington health workers, are now reported to have turned up, but not before £25,000 of NHS money was spent looking for them. And Liberal Democrat shadow MP Bridget Fox says this makes the case against ID cards stronger than ever.

Last month Bridget contacted hundreds of constituents seeking their views on the Labour Government's compulsory ID card scheme; over 90% opposed it.

Bridget says: "The farce over the Whittington Hospital data discs shows how carelessly our personal information can be handled these days.

"No system is foolproof, however much money you spend on it. But the Government is still pouring billions of our money into their pet database projects.

"More and more people are now sceptical about Labour's plans for compulsory ID cards. We will all have to pay for ID cards, but there is no evidence they will make us any safer.

"Liberal Democrats reject this 'plastic poll tax'; we want to see the money spent on more police instead. Islington South's Labour MP Emily Thornberry still thinks ID cards are a good idea. Will she now accept that she's got it wrong?"
