Council leader James Kempton
More than 6000 lampposts in Islington have been replaced over the past five years as part of a huge revamp of street lighting by Islington's Lib Dem council. The council also repaired 28,000 lights, and has brought light to 105 miles of roads.
The huge five-year plan to improve street lighting in the borough was a Liberal Democrat manifesto commitment aimed at making the streets safer at night.
Councillor James Kempton, Islington's Lib Dem leader, said:
"Street lighting is one of the things that people take for granted. But it's easy to forget that when Labour ran Islington council you just couldn't even take things like that for granted. They presided over a gloom both figurative and literal.
"I'm overjoyed that the Liberal Democrats have made Islington safer and brighter and have fulfilled this manifesto pledge."
