Councillor Greg Foxsmith, executive member for transport, is a keen cyclist.
The Liberal Democrats running Islington have doubled the amount of cycle parking in the borough over the last year - and have promised to double them again. Islington now has twice the number of bike racks than neighbouring borough Hackney.
One year ago there were 420 racks to lock your bike in Islington. Today there are more than 880, and an ongoing programme will install 1000 new stands by 2010. New 'lock-it-safe' cycle parking, accessed with a smartcard, will also provide very safe places to lock bikes at Taverner and Peckett Squares, with the first to be opened this August.
Councillor Greg Foxsmith, executive member for transport and the environment, said:
"Cycling is a great way to get around London. Not only is it quick and green, but it saves you money on running a car or paying for the bus. I cycle, and I would heartily recommend it.
"The Liberal Democrats want to support people to make this choice, and the main drawback is having somewhere secure to leave your bike. That's why we've doubled the number of cycle racks in Islington and will double it again.
"The Lib Dems are committed to encouraging and supporting cycling, but I was surprised to learn how far ahead we are of our neighbouring Labour-run boroughs. Hackney barely has half the number of places to park your bike!"
