Councillor Ruth Polling, executive member for parks, relaxes at Laycock Street with local councillors James and Emily.
Improvements to another two of Islington's parks have been unveiled. Local councillors from Bunhill and St. Mary's wards went along to some of their local green space to enjoy the park revamps at Laycock Street and Radnor Street.
The playground at Laycock Street has been redesigned, with fantastic new play equipment.
The park at Laycock Street, just off Upper Street near Highbury Corner, has been given a brand new playground and ball court, as well as being replanted and spruced up. The park has been redesigned and opened up to design out some of the problems with antisocial behaviour that local residents had reported to the Council. Overgrown mounds that blocked lines of sight, and had become hangouts for drinkers and drug abusers, have been removed and replaced with attractive low-growing shrubs.
St. Mary's ward Liberal Democrat councillor Emily Fieran-Reed commented:
"The park is now really lovely - not like it used to be. It had become a bit of a haunt for antisocial behaviour. The brand new redesign goes to show that with a bit of thought and effort we can design criminality out of our public spaces and claim London back for ordinary people."
Radnor Street Gardens, in the South of the Borough, has been reopened as an active play space with lots of exciting new play equipment. Radnor Street Gardens has seen five months of work by the Council and EC1 New Deal before reopening in time for Summer - and the local community helped with the redesign, right down to choosing the plants, furniture, and play equipment.
Local Bunhill councillor Jyoti Vaja, said:
"We had fantastic weather for opening of this great new park - and about 300 people came along. I've never seen so many people in the gardens before, and I hope that the brand new playground will stay this popular with our young people."
Jyoti added:
"These park improvements go to show that even after eight years of Liberal Democrat control in Islington we are still improving this borough, and things here are still getting better all the time."
