Councillor Terry Stacy meets the Islington police Restorative Justice team.
Islington council with Islington Police have launched a new Restorative Justice programme in the borough to tackle crime and antisocial behaviour. Police will dispense 'instant restorative justice' on the streets when vandals are caught in the act, while restorative conferencing will bring offenders and victims face to face. Restorative Justice is a longstanding Liberal Democrat policy for dealing with crime.
Vandals in Islington will be made to fix things they have damaged or make reparations to the community, such as by cleaning up graffiti.
For crimes against people, the offenders and victims will be brought together with a trained facilitator. Offenders will hear how their crime affects their victims, while the victims themselves will be given the chance to get closure and help recover from the impact of crime. It is hoped that restorative conferencing will help tackle longstanding community problems and antisocial behaviour.
Councillor Terry Stacy, Islington's Lib Dem Community Safety chief and Magistrate, said:
"The big problem is that criminals and offenders are ignorant to the consequences of their actions.
"The restorative justice programme should confront criminals with the consequences of their actions. When they get to see first hand how their crimes affect others they might realise that they are living the wrong sort of life."
