Islington Libs Dems Welcome New Environment Chief

May 19, 2008 12:32 PM

Councillor Greg FoxsmithGreg Foxsmith, a legal aid lawyer with a background in community work, has been elected to Islington's executive, and will be leading on the environment for Islington council.

Greg was elected as the Executive Member for the Environment by a full meeting of the council. He will be in charge of a huge range of public services, including parking, street cleaning, planning, rubbish disposal and recycling. He will also be leading the borough to meet the Liberal Democrats' ambition of making Islington the most environmentally-friendly borough in London.

Councillor Foxsmith said:

"Living in Islington I have a real enthusiasm for our streets and parks, and I a want to protect our borough's unique and special character.

"In my work as a legal aid lawyer and as a mentor to young people, I've seen firsthand how people's environment affects their well-being and sense of community. If an area is run down and neglected, then the people living there will feel that way too. I want to make sure that everyone can be proud of the streets and spaces beyond their front door.

"The Liberal Democrats have done a lot to make this an environmentally-friendly place, and have been recognised nationally and by the party for our efforts. I mean to continue this good work, and to challenge the new Mayor of London to give his support to the many positive things we are doing here locally."
