Liberal Democrat campaigner Meral Ece has pledged to fight for fairer fuel bills for Londoners.
Meral recently met with the Liberal Democrat party leader Nick Clegg to discuss the issue.
Nick Clegg used his first Prime Minister's Questions to highlight the scandal of higher charges for prepay meter users. Customers with prepay meters tend to be the poorest families and pensioners yet the energy companies charge them more than customers who pay standard quarterly bills.
Consumer group Energywatch reports that the big energy companies are charging prepayment meter users an average of £195 extra each year for their gas and electricity compared to the best available deals.
Meral, who is campaigning to become the local member of the Greater London Authority for Hackney, Islington and Waltham Forest , wants to see the GLA conduct an investigation into fuel poverty in the capital.
Meral speaks out on fuel poverty
Meral says "It's time to end the scandal of the poorest families paying the most for their energy needs. It's shocking how many local families and pensioners are struggling to keep warm. I am calling on the energy companies serving Londoners to give justice to our residents and a fairer deal for prepay users."
