Reacting to the local election results, Liberal Democrat campaigner Bridget Fox has called on Tony Blair to resign.
Speaking to party members, Bridget said:
"Time's up Tony - and time for a change.
"May's election results show the lowest vote for Labour in a generation. All over the UK , people are rejecting Labour. And supporters of all parties agree that Tony Blair's departure is long overdue.
"Ten years ago, the new Labour government promised so much. Ten years on, there have been so many Labour let-downs.
"The gap between rich & poor has risen. So has violent crime. Pension schemes have been raided, post offices closed. They have wasted public money on gimmicks from the Dome to ID cards. Hospitals are in debt and schools still over-crowded. Labour broke their promises on tuition fees. They broke the rules on party loans. Their promise of an ethical foreign policy has ended in dodgy arms deals - and the illegal war in Iraq .
"But it's not just Tony Blair to blame. Gordon Brown has been in Downing Street throughout. When Blair wasted £5 billion on the war in Iraq , Gordon signed the cheques - and David Cameron helped vote it all through. Together they have wasted so much money, so much opportunity, so many hopes - and so many lives. Things have to change.
"Liberal Democrats led the opposition to the war in Iraq . We're serious about tackling climate change through fairer taxes, not stealth taxes. We believe doctors and teachers know better than bureaucrats how to run our NHS and schools. We support free speech, the right to a fair trial, and we oppose ID cards.
"Last week's elections saw the national Lib Dem vote at 26%, up 4% from the last General Election. With a 1% swing needed to win Islington South & Finsbury from Labour, it's not just Tony Blair who's on the way out."
