A motion to remove gyratory systems and roundabouts across Islington has been tabled for the Council meeting on 26 June 2007.
It is being moved by Liberal Democrat councillor Ursula Woolley, and seconded by Cllr Andrew Cornwall, and will be debated and voted upon at the council meeting.
The motion states:
that Islington is blighted by outdated road layouts which are the product of decades of failed traffic planning by successive Labour and Conservative Governments.
that gyratory systems put the interests of drivers passing through the borough ahead of those of local people, as they divide communities and impede the development of thriving town centres.
that they increase pollution and reduce air quality by increasing distances traffic must travel.
that these road layouts can worsen road safety and increase casualties.
The gyratory systems at Archway, Highbury Corner, Kings Cross, and York Way come under specific scrutiny. All of these gyratories are on routes controlled by Transport for London, so TfL agreement will be needed for changes to the road layouts.
The motion calls on the council to lobby Transport for London to remove these unacceptable roundabouts, and to consult with residents, businesses, and the Nags Head Town Centre Board regarding the future of the Nags Head gyratory.
Councillor Ursula Woolley said:
"These outdated road layouts and gyratories in Islington are bad for local pedestrians and cyclists, and don't make journeys any faster for drivers either. They belong to a time that's long gone and it's high time we improved the roads in our borough.
"I want to call on TfL to make sure that the end to all the gyratories in Islington is just around the corner."
