Local people and Liberal Democrat councillors in Mildmay are petitioning Transport for London to get buses to turn off their engines whilst waiting at the bus stand outside Hathersage Court on Newington Green.
Councillor Anna Berent commented:
"People just want a bit of peace and quiet. TfL should make their buses turn off their engines¾ and if they won't, the council should take this bus stand away altogether.
"Local councillors have regularly heard complaints from residents about the amount of noise and pollution generated by these idling buses. This is particularly bad at night, and it keeps people awake. All it would take to stop this constant annoyance is for TfL to issue a simple instruction to its drivers."
"The new environmentally-friendly hybrid buses on route 141 pass through Newington Green, so it's ironic that any benefit from reduced emissions is being lost due to the running of engines at this bus stand."
A public petition signed by residents of Hathersage Court has been launched. It reads:
"We the undersigned want London Buses to ensure that buses on the bus stand in Newington Green turn their engines off. We are concerned about the impact on local air pollution, noise and the wasteful CO2 from the emissions of the buses in a residential area. We also call on Islington Council to write to Transport for London and if Transport for London do not take action that they, Islington Council, remove the bus stand."
