In an unprecedented move, Islington residents have donated money to their local council.
The Liberal Democrat Council encouraged residents to pay their Council Tax by direct debit by giving them a £20 discount. However, they also urged people to donate this £20 to the Council's innovative Climate Change Fund.
It was announced yesterday that nearly a thousand residents have volunteered their £20.
The Council is eager to encourage the use of direct debit because it costs only 2 pence to process each direct debit as opposed to £3 for some other methods of payment, thus increasing the efficiency of the system and saving money.
Cllr Andrew Cornwell, Executive Member for Finance said:
"We are very pleased that people have been enthusiastic about this innovation. In fact, last month saw an increase in direct debit users that is 15 times the average monthly growth. Taxpayers will see the money saved from using the direct debit system put straight back into frontline services.
"In addition, the fact that nearly a thousand people have chosen to donate their £20 saving to the Climate Change Fund suggests that the community is behind the Council in its plans for greening Islington. We now feel confident to really push forward on renewable energy and low carbon transport projects and the community will begin to see the benefits of the £3 million already set aside for this purpose."
