On Thursday 4th January 2007 at 7.30pm, the Council's South Area Committee meets for the first time in the Council Chamber of Finsbury Town Hall in Rosebery Avenue.
The meeting is believed to be the first use of the Chamber for meetings of elected councillors since the former Metropolitan Borough of Finsbury merged with Islington in 1965.
It been made possible by the sale of the building to the Urdang Dance Academy, which has now moved into the building and opened it as its new home.
The meeting - intended to be the first of many such meetings - fulfils a pledge made in the Finsbury Declaration of 1992 by then local Liberal Democrat councillor Sarah Ludford, now MEP for London.
Sarah Ludford said: "This is a historic meeting. We pledged to bring civic government back to the building, and we have fulfilled that pledge."
Clerkenwell Lib Dem councillor George Allan said:
"The high cost of repair after years of Labour neglect stood in the way of using the Council chamber or main hall, until the Lib Dem council sold it to Urdang in 2004 with a requirement to make the building available for local meetings."
The Area Committee meeting will be chaired by Cllr Paula Belford of Canonbury Ward and will be attended by Councillors from all 4 of the South Area wards - Clerkenwell, Bunhill, Canonbury and St Peter's. Among other things it will discuss the future of the St Luke's area of Bunhill and make decisions on a traffic management issue in Clerkenwell.
