Dear Editor
Minimum wage has risen. This is great news for thousands of Islington residents. In a deprived borough like Islington many people work in industries and positions where they are paid the minimum wage.
However this just doesn't go far enough. It doesn't seem sensible that we say that the minimum amount a person can live on is just under £10,000 a year yet the minimum tax threshold is £4,000. No one can live on so little. This low rate also makes it less appealing to return to work for those on benefits.
Lib Dems want to change this. This weekend we will be getting signatures across the country asking the government to implement a Green Tax policy. Not only would this mean taxing activities that waste energy and damage the environment. It would also raise the minimum tax paying threshold and lift another 2 million people out of paying tax, while giving the average family an extra £1,000 a year.
It's time for a dramatic over haul in the way we tax, and the way we live.
Look out for us on Saturday
Regards
